“You afraid?” he asked, my brother’s voice a little too loud in the silence.

I smirked. Naethan was two years younger, but he was always the one looking out for me. “Terrified,” I replied. “You?”

He laughed nervously. “Oh, I’m just shitting my pants over here.”

I gave him a reassuring smile and nodded. “Let’s go.”

He nodded back, suddenly serious, and threw his hood over his messy hair. “Let’s go,” he echoed softly as we began our descent into the city.

                                                                    *

The City of Graves stretched out for miles below us. On every side of its periphery, the earth rose and then sloped upwards, sinking the city a hundred metres from ground level. The earth hissed under our feet as we slid down, the ground falling steeply beneath us. The wind ripped past our faces as we sped towards the city. Above, a cloudless sky lit the sleeping metropolis with starlight, plating the forgotten buildings and towers with silver.

The first flesh-walker attacked us just as the ground levelled out. It emerged suddenly, white as bone, baring a maw full of needles as it lunged.
I threw myself to the side, my hand already freeing a blade from my belt. The momentum from the descent threw me into a roll, but I found my feet and spun to charge. I hardly moved before Naethan sunk two arrows into its head. The fleshling collapsed, lifeless.

I stared at it, then back up at my brother. “Hey, I had that.”

He grinned. “Sorry, was a reflex. These guys get me all jumpy,” he said, reaching down to retrieve his arrows. I sheathed my blade and snorted. Looking back and upwards from where we came from, I felt my throat tighten. It was going to be a lot tougher climbing out of this pit. There was a reason why it was called the City of Graves.

“You alright?” he asked, his hand finding my shoulder, gripping it. I shook the thought out of my head. “Yeah. Come on, the city’s just ahead.”
Whoops, had some problems and wanted to edit it but ended up deleting it. Sorry if this appears in your watchlist twice! Haven't written for ages so this is pretty shoddy stuff but I like the feel of getting back into some writing again. Also, HOW THE HELL DO YOU INDENT FOR PARAGRAPHS D:
